Laser Skin Resurfacing - Face, Eyelids, and Lips
Lasers allow the precise and safe removal of the outer layers of wrinkled, weathered, and sun-damaged skin followed by the body’s natural ability to regenerate a new outer layer of skin. Continued improvement occurs as new collagen and elastin are produced over several months. The “resurfacing“ process creates improved skin quality and a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance. Laser resurfacing can be performed in either limited areas of the face, to smooth out lower eyelid wrinkles or lines around the mouth, or full face treatment to tighten and smooth the entire face and upper neck. Laser resurfacing can be performed alone or in conjuction with eyelid surgery to enhance the result. Either a carbon dioxide or erbium laser are typically used. I have used both types of lasers since 1994 and I have found the erbium to be safer with a faster healing time compared with carbon dioxide. Patients typically can return to work within 8 days compared to a more prolonged recovery with other lasers.
Performing laser resurfacing safely and with consistently good results requires experience not only in the performance of the treatment but of equal importance in the aftercare of the freshly treated skin. Prior to treatment patients are prescribed an anti-viral medication to prevent a cold sore (herpes simplex infection). Patients who have recently taken Accutane are precluded from laser treatments. For your comfort, “twilight”anesthesia is provided. Following the procedure is a biocclusive dressing is applied which accelerates healing and eliminates any discomfort. The following day you will return to the office to cleanse the skin with sterile saline solution. Close follow-up care results in consistently excellent results.
