Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to heal?
Eyelid skin heals very rapidly. The upper eyelid sutures are typically removed after 5 to 7 days. Lower eyelid sutures absorb by themselves. Swelling and bruising around the eyelids may take up to 2 weeks to resolve.
How much discomfort should I expect?
The surgery is usually performed with twilight anesthesia; therefore you will not feel or remember many details of the surgical procedure. Afterwards, the eyelids may feel numb, but little or no pain will be experienced. Of course, pain relieving medication will be provided as needed.
How can I minimize bruising and when can I wear make-up?
Bruising and swelling can be reduced by eliminating medications including aspirin, Motrin, vitamins, and certain foods for two weeks prior to surgery. Dr. Kopelman will also prescribe homeopathic medications that will diminish swelling. After surgery, ice cubes should be placed in a zipper lock plastic bag and applied to your eyelids every 15 minutes while awake for the first 48 hours. You may apply make-up over the lower eyelids the next day and over the upper eyelids 4 days later.
When can I take a shower?
You may shower the morning following surgery.

Most of the sutures are removed in 5-7 days. Some will be left in for 10 days.
Will I have to change my hair style following surgery?
Dr. Kopelman makes every effort to camouflage his incisions. Initially, you may want to drape your hair over the front of your ear, and after a week you may apply make-up. The marks will eventually fade.
When can I resume my social schedule?
I believe it is best to postpone social activities for two weeks to allow the swelling and bruising to dissipate.
